At 6500 meters (over 21 thousand feet), Mount Sajama -in the Sajama National Park- is the highest mountain in Bolivia and one of the most incredible sites to visit while in the country.

Established in 1939, the Sajama National Park is the oldest national park in Bolivia and an extraordinary destination for photographers and adventurers alike. Because of its magnificent landscapes and imposing volcanoes, its welcoming population and its varied fauna (vicuñas, llamas, viscachas, flamingos, etc.), the park is known as the “Secret of the Incas”, a unique destination you cannot miss. Located 255 kilometers northeast from La Paz, Sajama treasures secrets such as geysers, hot springs, and a countless number of endemic fauna and flora.

As first-hand explorers and travelers, we at Altitude have designed a package that offers the best to our visitors while respecting the environment. Recognizing the challenges posed by the weather and geographic conditions, we prioritize your comfort and security to ensure the most of your enjoyment.

Programme:

Day 1

The tour starts in La Paz at 9am. We will then take a 4-hour drive to the Sajama village, crossing the extensive Andean plateau and entering the Sajama National Park. During the journey we will be able to appreciate the arid landcsapes that characaterize this area, home to the famous chullpares (an ancient Aymara funerary tower), and the Curaguara de Carangas – the Sistine Chapel of the Andes. Once in Sajama, we will get our mules (to carry heavy camping equipment) and head for the basecamp. The trek will last approximately 3 hours. We will then camp out at 4800 meters above the sea level.

Day 2

Today we will take a 7-hour uphill trek along sandy road, enjoying the beautiful landscape offered by this site and observing the endemic flora and fauna. We will then camp out at an altitude of 5700m. We will have lunch and then an early (and chilly) night.

Day 3

This third day starts at 1am, to start an early walk across the glacier. We will arrive to the flat summit of Sajama at approximately 9am: from here we will appreciate the beautiful landscape dominated by this incredible natural masterpiece.  We will then make our way back to the high camp and continue down to the base camp, finally reaching the Sajama village for a restful evening.

Day 4

After a relaxing bath in the thermal waters of Manasaya, we will start our journey back to La Paz, where we should arrive at noon.
